Skip Counting Freebie

Skip counting is an important skill for 2nd grade because it is needed for telling time, counting money, and multiplication.  Here is a skip counting freebie that I would like to share with you.   It is great for morning work or homework for your second graders.  Click on the picture below for your skip counting freebie.

A cute song for skip counting is Bingo, Bango, Bongo by Shari Sloane.  You can buy the song for 99 cents from iTunes.  I project the words on my SMART Board while my students sing the song.

My students love singing these Counting by Fives songs.

Classroom Pictures

I moved into a new classroom this year.   Here are some BEFORE pictures of my second grade classroom.

I wanted to throw away as much as I could and not just shove things into my cabinets.  Why is it so difficult for us to throw things away?  Why do I need to keep my kindergarten materials from six years ago when  I now teach second grade?

My theme this year is monsters.  I had my students pretend they had a monster for a friend.  They loved making their monsters and writing about their monster friend.

We made these adorable monsters for math.  We are learning about place value and the different ways to write a number.   I wanted to do a fun activity with my students so we made these place value monsters.

Click here for the template for the monsters.  Click here for the I am Expanding template.

Click here for your  free copy of Melonheadz drawer files.  The monster behavior chart is by Kindergarten Lifestyles.

The first day of school I read the students the book called "The Kissing Hand."  We did an art project and wrote about how we felt on our first day of school.

This summer I made a Classroom Helper chart using Melonheadz clip art.

I would love to put my alphabet above my whiteboard but we aren't allowed.  We cannot have bulletin boards go all the way to the ceiling.   Our bulletin boards have to be 18 inches from the ceiling.

A few years ago, my chair was worn thin and the staples were showing.  I had a parent volunteer recover my chair for me.

At our school we have to use equity sticks or a random generator on our SMART Board.  We are not suppose to have students raise their hands to answer a question.  You can get the numbers here.

Our school implements the PBIS behavior system.   I love these positive behavior posters from A Burst in First.

Here is a snapshot of my Whole Brain classroom rules

My windows look a little bare.  I need to find a parent volunteer to sew some valances for them.

I am linking up with Blog Hoppin' for their "Where" linky party.

Back to School

Last Monday was our first day back to school.  I have had 100 percent attendance all this week and my students are loving school.  On the first day back to school, I gave my students a little treat.  Many of them didn't eat breakfast and were very hungry.

I read the Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn to my students.  It is about a little raccoon that doesn't want to go to school.  His mother tells him a little secret and kisses his palm.

My students wrote about how they felt on the first day of school and made Chester the raccoon.  They were so excited when I hang up their projects on the wall!

Click on the picture below for the writing paper.

At the end of the day, we went outside to blow bubbles.  It was a perfect way to end our day.

What do you do on your first day of school?

A Triple Scoop of Second

I am linking up with Brenda over at Primary Inspired for It's a Triple Scoop of 2nd Grade Linky Party.  We are showcasing two of our favorite products from our TPT store that we love using in our classroom and one favorite product from our fellow bloggers.

My first scoop is my August Daily Practice.  I use it for morning work and it is aligned with the common core standards.  My students complete them first thing in the morning while I collect homework and take attendance and lunch count.  Sometimes for a change of pace, they will complete it for homework.  They are a great review to review skills needed for second grade.

Click on the picture below for your free sample of morning work for second grade.  You will have to click on the preview for your free math and language arts.  The August monthly packet reviews many first grade standards.  The monthly packets get  more difficult as the school year progresses.  I have discounted it 20% off for this weekend.

My second scoop goes to my Daily Math Warm Ups which is my number one seller.  I love this because it covers the necessary math skills for second grade.  It is a great spiral review for second grade.  My students are able to complete them independently and feel successful in math..  I like the format because it is simple and uses very little ink.  There is no prep--just print and go.

Click on the picture and go to the preview for your free math sample pages for 2nd grade.  The first trimester has 2 versions.  One version has regrouping and the other version has no regrouping since we all teach these skills at different times.  It is all included in the packet for one price.  Leave a comment below with your email address and I will choose 3 lucky winners to receive my First Trimester Math Warm Ups.  I will choose the winners Sunday , August 10, 2014 before I go to bed.

The third scoop goes to Text Based Evidence Reading Passages by Miss DeCarbo.  I love her Text Based Evidence Reading Passages!  She has created 4 packets that I use with my class.

My students read the story and go back and highlight and look for evidence.  Theses passages allow them to practice this skill in a fun and engaging manner.  I like to project the stories on my Smart Board and we practice this skill together.
