Math Journal Prompts for Second Grade

This year I am having my students write in math journals to explain how to solve problems.  Students need to be writing and discussing math daily.  Math journals allow students to solve problems using pictures and words.  It is  a great way for me to see whether a student truly understands a math concept.  I try to involve problems that require critical thinking.  When you start math journals, I suggest doing lots of modeling with the students.  Below are a few examples of our math journals.  I simply type up the problem, cut them, and have them ready  for the students.  The students quickly glue them into a spiral notebook and solve the math prompt.

Click on the picture below for your free math journal prompts.  There are a total of 16 math prompts.

Now I am off to do progress reports.
